New York: Grove Press, 1967
First American edition. The first appearance of The Master & Margarita in the United States, preceding the Harper and Row edition. A near fine copy, just with some foxing to the fore-edge of the outer text block. The faintest foxing to the pastedowns and endpapers but the contents otherwise flawless. In a near fine, unclipped dust jacket, with a tiny nick on the spine and the slightest bit of rubbing at the extremities. An uncommonly beautiful example still. The story of the Devil’s visit to Moscow, in an atheistic Soviet Union. It is Bulgakov’s masterpiece, and arguably the greatest work of 20th Century Russian literature.
